Product description for Franz Keller Kirchberg Oberrotweil Spätburgunder GG 2021
Info
The Kirchberg vineyard in Oberrotweil varies in exposure from west to south/southwest. The western part has a significantly higher proportion of rock. The influence of the wind is just as decisive here. Compared to the nearby Eichberg or Schlossberg, the Kirchberg is always noticeably cooler. The soil contains light-coloured, calcareous volcanic gravel. This plot was planted by Franz Keller in 1975. All Pinot Noirs at the Franz Keller winery are matured in barriques. For the Erste Lage Oberbergen Bassgeige, the proportion of new wood is low at 10-20%, but even in the GG range, this rate rarely exceeds 35%. This year, however, it was 40% new wood. The Pinot Noir matures in barrels for 18 months.
Colour
Brilliant, luminous cherry red with a delicate, light rim.
Nose
Phenomenal and multi-layered, it trumpets from the glass. The fruit presents itself loudly, with sour cherry as its hallmark. This wonderfully stimulating fruit nails itself to the palate for minutes. Morello cherry, red currant, and raspberry support this idea. It has a cooling and refreshing effect. The cool year of 2021 contributes to this new style at Keller. A subtle spice in the background underlines it. Pepper, oregano, and sage are prominent. Very subtle nuances of forest floor, pine needles, and cones emerge. This appears ethereal and earthy at the same time. Cocoa beans and a hint of dark chocolate lend it complexity. At the end, juniper emerges in full force.
Palate
It appears majestic on the palate. Its velvety structure fully coats the mouth. Very fine, polished tannins support it. Finally, the sour cherry comes through. Fruit and its crisp, stimulating acid structure take over. The fruit is incredibly sexy and practically begging to be bitten into. It has an ethereal, cooling effect and benefits from the fresh herbal dominance that establishes itself behind the cherry. Eucalyptus, mint, and parsley are prominent. Its fine, mineral appearance clearly complements these cool, elegant characteristics.
