Description

Product description for Franz Keller Eichberg Oberrotweil Spätburgunder GG 2021

Info

In 1994, Fritz Keller planted this plot in the Oberrotweiler Eichberg with Burgundian clone material. The plot is located in the lower part of the site. The exposure is predominantly south-facing, but partially also southeast and southwest-facing. The tephrite, a dark volcanic rock that is usually found near craters due to eruptions, ensures a distinctive type of Pinot Noir. All Pinot Noirs at the Franz Keller winery are aged in barriques. For the Erste Lage Oberbergen Bassgeige, the proportion of new wood is low at 10-20%, but even in the GG range, this rate rarely exceeds 35%. In the Eichberg, it was as high as 45% in 2021. The Pinot Noir matures in barrels for 18 months.

Colour

Dark, luminous cherry red with delicate violet reflections

Nose

It appears deep and dark. Blueberry, elderberry, and a hint of black cherry build slowly. Pickled morello cherries and a hint of raspberry and blackberry are added, as if on cue. After a few moments, the fruit is overshadowed by the developing floral note. Lilac, violet, and pansy now dominate. Fennel and artichoke can be detected in the background, providing vegetal freshness. Coriander seeds and caraway touch this nerve and bring additional ethereal spice into play. A hint of roasted coffee, along with Darjeeling and chai, ensures an intense, long-lasting encounter.

Palate

2021 Oberrotweil Eichberg Spätburgunder GG immediately fills the mouth. Its fruit is dense and expansive. Yet it still retains the character of the cool 2021 vintage. Like a fine spray, it hits the palate with plenty of force. The fruit now appears much more detailed and is clearly characterized by a substantial acidity. It appears compact and also significantly brighter than its nose would suggest. The floral aromas combine beautifully with the ethereal side. It coats the palate with fullness and tremendous velvety texture. The coolness and elegance are enormously stimulating and immediately demand the next sip.

Wine Advocate

Score: 95

From several terraces planted with a range of clones and massal selections, the dark ruby-colored 2021 Eichberg Oberrotweil Spätburgunder GG opens with a deep, pure, clear, fresh yet most of all intense and distinctive nose with floral cassis and cherry aromas. Silky and lush on the palate, this is a full-bodied, elegant and generous, persistently intense, saline and structured Eichberg with firm tannins, lingering salts and generous juiciness. This is a real grand cru with a spectacular finish, even in a difficult (rainy) vintage such as 2021. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in February 2024.
