Product description for Foradori Sgarzon Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2017 (bio)Christoph Raffelt: The sweet yeast of the still-young Sgarzon is also evident on the palate. Partly red, but primarily dark and silky fruit blends in. The texture is also silky, reminiscent of a layer of burnt clay, so typical of Tinaja aging. Everything appears clear, pure, refined, and juicy with lively acidity and a downright sparkling minerality. The fruit becomes increasingly darker in the finish, but remains crisp and fresh, accompanied by bitter tobacco, which was also present in the aroma.
Information
Teroldego from the Sgarzon vineyard (Trentino dialect for vine) in Campo Rotaliano, Mezzolombardo, grown on 2.5 hectares of alluvial floodplain, about one kilometer from the Morei vineyard, which is close to the Foradori winery. There is a lot of sand in the topsoil, and the plot is open and barely protected from the cold winds. The grapes ripen about a week later than in the Morei. The wine was aged on the skins for eight months in tinajas, Spanish 420-liter cellar amphorae. In spring 2018, the wine was racked into concrete tanks to allow it to harmonize over the summer.
Colour
Slightly transparent garnet red with purple reflections
Nose
Of the brothers Morei and Sgarzon, the Sgarzon is always the somewhat lighter, wilder, and cooler wine, which is no surprise given that it comes from the cooler site. The 2017 vintage of the Sgarzon is earthy and stony on the nose, with plenty of undergrowth and the juice of red berries. Dried herbs play a role here, including sloes and barberries, as well as a touch of juniper and elderberries.
Palate
On the palate, you’ll find earthy and stony notes, as well as a fine texture reminiscent of a layer of burnt clay, which unmistakably derives from aging in amphorae. Added to this is the young, challenging, and powerful acidity of the Sgarzon, which, together with the partly red, partly dark fruit, ensures plenty of juiciness and freshness. There’s plenty of sour cherry in this wine, along with some sloe, but also a hint of dark plum. A subtle saltiness emerges in the finish, further enhancing the already impressive drinking experience.
