Information

Teroldego from the Morei vineyard (Trentino dialect for dark) in Campo Rotaliano, Mezzolombardo, grown on 2.5 hectares of alluvial floodplain. The Morei vineyard is protected from cold north winds by nearby, steep cliffs. The rock stores heat during the day, which radiates onto the vineyard at night. The soil here is very stony, and therefore relatively warm, dense, dark, and mineral, much like the wine of the same name, Morei Teroldego, reflects it. The wine was aged for eight months on the skins in tinajas, Spanish 420-liter cellar amphorae. In spring 2018, the wine was racked into concrete tanks, where it harmonized over the summer. One-third of the 2016 Morei was then transferred to cilindricas, smaller, 330-liter cylindrical amphorae. There the wine matured for another year (without skins). It is, so to speak, the Reserva among amphora wines.

Nose

Of the brothers Morei and Sgarzon, the Morei is always the darker and darker-fruited wine, as its name suggests. On the nose, the 2016 Morei Cilindrica seems a little more closed and acidic than the current 2017 vintage and also than the 2015 Morei, which has been in the bottle longer. Pomegranate juice meets cranberries, sour cherries, and red currants. Finally, a hint of elderberry juice, a herbal spice, and a note of fired clay and chalky earth mingle with it.

Palate

On the palate, the Morei Cilindrica is warmer. The fruit blossoms, becoming juicy and dense, appearing riper and darker than on the nose, with a sweet fruit core. The tannins are polished and round, and the acidity offers tension and vibrancy, but is riper and more restrained than the nose suggests. The wine should be allowed time and air before enjoying.
