Product description for Foradori Sgarzon Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2016 (bio)
Christoph Raffelt: The sweet yeast of this still-young Sgarzon is also evident on the palate. Partly red, but primarily dark and silky fruit blends in. The texture is also silky, reminiscent of a burnt clay layer, so typical of Tinaja aging. Everything appears clear, pure, refined, and juicy with lively acidity and a downright sparkling minerality. The fruit becomes increasingly darker in the finish, but remains crisp and fresh, and is accompanied by bitter tobacco, which was also present in the aroma.
Information
Teroldego Rotaliano from the Sgarzon (Trentino dialect for vine) vineyard in Campo Rotaliano, Mezzolombardo. 2.5 hectares on sandy alluvial soil. Aged for eight months on the skins in Spanish cellar amphorae, so-called tinajas.
Colour
dark garnet red
Nose
From the brothers Morei and Sgarzon, the Sgarzon is always the somewhat lighter, wilder, and cooler wine, which is no surprise given that it comes from a cool location. Notes of sloe, pomegranate, ivy, herbs, and a hint of raw meat dominate here, along with some stone and a touch of juicy, ripe elderberry.
Palate
On the palate, there is tension and the fine, yet present tannin, which unmistakably comes from the aging in amphorae. It is almost like the finely rubbed surface of a layer of fired clay. The wine’s acidity is youthful and challenging, the fruit cool and juicy, reminiscent of sour cherries and sloes. The structure is earthy, lively, and very mineral, yet already with a touch of elegance that will only increase over the coming years.

Wine Advocate
Score: 91
I absolutely enjoyed the 2016 Teroldego Sgarzon. I appreciated the wine even more when I learned of the hardships experienced in this vintage, which saw a nasty attack of downy mildew and other fungal-related problems after extended rains. The wine is made with 100% Teroldego that has been fermented in amphorae with six months of skin contact. This vintage appears bright and juicy with lots of the primary fruit intensity (complete with blackberry and dried blueberry) that you get with this grape. Earthy or savory notes of autumnal leaves, cured meat and tilled soil appear on the close. The finish is streamlined and tight. Some 12,000 bottles were made.

Lovely deep ruby color. A brooding nose hints at ripe red cherry, strawberry, minerals and sweet spices, complicated by aromatic herbs. Then also reticent on the palate with juicy acidity lifting the floral and red fruit flavors. Finishes long and fresh, with building salinity.
