Product description for Familia Nin Ortiz “La Rodeda” Velles Vinyes 2019
Information about the wine
This wine comes from a vineyard of just 0.4 hectares, the fruit of which was still processed as Mas d’en Caçador until a few years ago. La Rodeda is listed as a separate vineyard in the appellation maps, something Carles Ortiz and Ester Nin were previously unaware of. They always counted it as part of the Mas d’en Caçador. What’s special is that this vineyard is almost 100% planted with approximately 80-year-old Garnacha Peluda, or Lladoner Pelut in French, a unique red Grenache variety. In addition, this vineyard has a northerly exposure and is also one of the highest in the entire Priorat. In addition to black Llicorella slate, red quartzite is found here. The grapes were fermented whole and aged 100% in new French barriques.
Colour
Deep, dark purple, colour-dense to the brim.
Nose
Wow, what depth, what a scent fills the room. Fresh, sweet blackberries, warm blueberry pie, licorice, fine tobacco, and smoky notes reminiscent of Islay whisky. All combined with a salty breeze, as if you were standing by the sea. Added to that are truffles and plenty of earthy notes, fantastic use of wood, and extremely skillful winemaking. A masterpiece is on the horizon, powerful yet complex and full of finesse.
Palate
The 2019 La Rodeda Velles Vinyes catapults this freshness admirably onto the tongue, juicy and intriguing. A true fulfillment and a surprise even for someone who tastes many special wines. You should secure a few bottles of this elegant, cool, multifaceted, energetic wine, which sets true standards in the world of wine! Be sure to open it at least two hours in advance and enjoy it from a large red wine glass.

They normally bottle one barrel of the single-vineyard La Rodeda, a 0.6-hectare plot planted 80 years ago at 350 meters in altitude with a northeast orientation. Having only one barrel of a wine is quite challenging; the first year they used a new barrel, and for me, the barrel marked the wine forever. The 2019 La Rodeda has a majority of Garnacha Peluda, a more rustic strain of Garnacha that has tannins that need longer time to get polished. They always use a Taransaud barrel for this wine, but this time the barrel was new. It has 14.2% alcohol and abundant, slightly dusty tannins and a dusty texture.
