Salt and acidity truly deliver a rollercoaster of emotions. It has considerable punch, but is not even remotely broad; rather, it is crystal clear. A truly crystalline wine. With a very fine melt, it makes its way to an almost infinitely elegant finish. The words “timeless” and “great” inevitably circle around this wine.
Information about the wine
Enric Soler is a former award-winning sommelier. Today, he is one of Spain’s best white wine producers. In the Catalan region of Penedès, he runs a project with just a few hectares of vineyards and a production of fewer than 15,000 bottles per year. The small the quantity, the greater the wines. Like few others, Enric Soler demonstrates the enormous potential of the Xarel.lo grape variety, the main variety of the Penedès. This single-vineyard wine comes from one hectare of biodynamic vineyards planted with Xarel.lo. Spontaneous fermentation and aging take place in used 300-liter oak barrels.

The Espenyalluchs 2022 offers a remarkably fresh, very attractive bouquet with citrus and smoky aromas and a stony minerality. The nose is dense, intense, and elegant at the same time. It is precise and clear and, despite its Mediterranean origins, almost cool.
Palate
On the palate, this white wine presents itself with crisp acidity, which is all the more surprising given that 2022 was a hot and dry year in the Penedès. The alcohol content is also only 12.5%. One of the strengths of the Xarel.lo grape variety is its excellent acidity with a moderate alcohol content. This white wine proves this once again. Added to this are a citrus profile, some stone fruit, and an invigorating saltiness on the finish. Above all, this wine possesses tremendous depth and complexity. It is vibrant on the palate, incredibly fresh and straightforward, and has a full-bodied, creamy texture. The Espenyalluchs 2022 is an incredibly good wine full of clarity, balance, and distinctive personality.

The toasty and showy 2022 Espenyalluchs was produced with Xarel.lo from a vineyard planted in 2011 at 400 meters in altitude, almost one hectare on clay and stony soils. It fermented in used 300-liter Burgundy barrels with indigenous yeasts, where the wine matured for eight to 10 months. It’s young and lively, still marked a little by the élevage, with smoke and spice, intermixed with notes of white flowers and with a sense of purity and freshness that I like very much. This wine keeps a low pH and remarkable acidity even in warm and dry years like 2022. 2,715 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2023.
