The 2017 Les Puits Saint-Aubin 1er Cru from Domaine Derain is a friendly conversationalist. It is open-hearted, chatting about ripe grapes and backing up its statements with rich cassis and cherry aromas. He balances it with delicate ethereal notes of sandalwood, underpinned with a vegetal touch of boxwood and a half-turn of the pepper mill. Terroir, he says, is an important theme, which he illustrates with aromas of graphite, until the server benevolently refills the glass.
