Product description for Dominique Derain Mercurey rouge “La Plante Chassey” 2019 (bio)
Christina Hilker: The 2015 Mercurey “La Plante Chassey” is a wine we savour with anticipation. It refreshes and entices us with the same pronounced fruitiness of the nose and a light-footed, lively, yet powerful structure. The acidity and tannins are exceptionally balanced and incredibly stimulating. The perfect accompaniment to a meal, allowing the food to take center stage and pleasantly accompanies it.
Wine Information
The site is an old south-southeast facing vineyard, planted by Derain’s grandfather a hundred years ago on deep, fine clay. 15% Pinot Béurrot (an old Burgundian variant of Pinot Gris) is planted here with Pinot Noir in a mixed set, as was customary in the past. The grapes were harvested by hand, transported in crates to ensure whole, undamaged grapes were processed. The red grapes were partially destemmed and crushed on the ground. The undamaged grapes were placed on top. They fermented in traditional wooden vats. At the end of alcoholic fermentation, the grapes were pressed with a basket press and aged in used foudres or tonneaux; they were not fined, unfiltered, and only minimally sulfurized.
Colour
Medium, bright purple.
Nose
Mercurey is a wine that simultaneously exhibits volatile acidity, a reduction in raisins, but also a touch of oxidation. All of this is intentional, skillfully done, and kept within manageable limits, but should be given some breathing room. Then fresh raspberries and sour cherries, tobacco, stone and petrichor, a hint of nut and almond appear.
Palate
On the palate, the fruit is very pure and clear, exceedingly juicy and fresh on a bed of round tannins. Here, too, alongside the fruit, there’s a truly distinctive note of lightly roasted hazelnuts, along with a hint of stone and tobacco. The freshness and juiciness, along with the nuttiness, define the drinking pleasure.
