The Blanc de Noirs Edition Limitée from de Sousa comes 100% from Grand Cru vineyards in Ambonnay. The base wines were aged in wooden barrels for 10 months before being bottled unfiltered and with a possible natural deposit for the second fermentation on July 17, 2019. The champagne was disgorged on March 14, 2023, and filled with 0 grams of shipping liqueur.

Colour

Intense straw yellow with persistent perlage.

Nose

Here, the nobility of the Pinot Noir spills quite impartially from the glass – onto my face. The nose is seamless; dissecting it here would be more of an attempt at an approximation than a precise reflection of the wine. The autolysis notes are contained; no bakery notes or anything like that, but rather fine bread crust, citrus, more the oils or blossoms than the coarse juice, plenty of high-performance hazelnuts, and plenty of salt-buttered, darkly toasted toast with a wafer-thin slice of lardo. Large glasses are a must, as is an immediate escape from the aperitif situation – get to the tables.

Palate

Winy on the first sip, the fine perlage sets the aromatic guardrails of the Champagne Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Édition Limitée from Champagne de Sousa. Roasted nuts and extract-rich red berry fruit open the palate and are accompanied by butter and toast notes as it develops. A grippy texture with a chalky impression on the palate, the almost powdery fine phenolics lend it its precise contours in addition to the mousse. A champagne for the well-laid table. Or to quench the thirst of the discerning.
