Description
Product description for Clos du Moulin aux Moines Pommard 1er Cru “Clos Orgelot” Monopole 2017 (bio)Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, there is a hint of fruity sweetness, distant power and a certain opulence, which is largely captured by the acidity and structure created by the present tannins. Overall, however, the wine appears somewhat warmer on the palate than on the nose, the acidity ripe and silky. In addition to the soft structure and the dark fruit, the light goût de campagne is most evident here, which, alongside all the finesse and elegance, always gives the domaine’s red wines a grounded character and, with its slightly animal notes, is practically archetypal for Pommard.
Information on the vineyard
The 1.1 hectare vineyard was planted at different times in 1921, 1990 and 1993 at an altitude of 310 m and faces east.
Terroir
This famous vineyard, characterized by clay and limestone, is located directly above Pommard Epenots, between Les Pézerolles and the Beaune 1er Cru “Clos des Mouches”.
Vineyard Information
Hand-harvested with a yield of 25-30 hl/ha, aging in barriques for between 18 and 22 months, of which 10-15% is new wood, total production 1,600 bottles.
Colour
Pomegranate red with distinct lightening towards the rim.
Nose
Even in its youth, the 2017 Pommard Premier Cru “Clos Orgelot” enchants the nose with subtle sour cherry fruit, raspberry, fig, vineyard peach, and a hint of orange peel. Violet, juniper, and clove join in after prolonged exposure to oxygen. Hints of maggi herb, wood smoke, and iron convey pure umami.
Palate
With a silky structure and delicate fruit sweetness, supported by a subtle bitterness from the still-youthful tannins, this fine wine pours onto our tongue and flows powerfully and full-bodiedly down the throat. Despite its current accessibility, it should be allowed the necessary maturation—the wine will only improve and become finer with the necessary time. At this point, be sure to decant and enjoy from a larger Burgundy glass.
