Description
The Avril family, winegrowers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1600 and co-founders of the appellation, have made a decisive contribution to its fame. Named after a walled plot at the foot of the Pope’s castle, their 35 hectares of vineyards cover all terroirs in 24 plots. Three hectares are allotted to the six white grape varieties. Whether white or red, there is only one wine each year. Paul-Vincent Avril, trained in Burgundy, has been running the estate since 2009. Strongly focused on viticulture, he switched to organic methods and drastically reduced yields to less than 20 hl/ha. In this way, he achieves optimal concentration and, after fourfold selection, outstanding quality. The grapes ferment – the early and the late ones – together with natural yeasts. The reds – now 55% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% mixed varieties – age for one year in older barrels. Always incredibly complex and with fabulous texture, they uniquely combine power and finesse.
