Product description for Clemens Busch Riesling Marienburg Grosses Gewächs “Rothenpfad” 2022 (bio)
Information about the Wine
The “Rothenpfad” parcel (above the railway viaduct opposite Pünderich) is part of the current Marienburg vineyard. The soil here is very light and based on very soft, weathered red clay slate. The particularly steep site has no access to a road, so the use of machinery is impossible. This means that the vines are not compacted by heavy equipment, providing ideal conditions for healthy root growth. For his Großes Gewächs, Clemens Busch uses only grapes from the oldest vines, at least 70 years old, trained in traditional single-post trellises. Spontaneous fermentation in old barrels, with long lees aging.
Colour
Bright golden yellow with delicate green reflections.
Nose
Stony notes, dried ginger, licorice, privet, and nettle on the opening. With sufficient oxygen, fruity notes of red apple, vineyard peach, and ripe pear emerge, heralding an invigorating, complex, and juicy wine.
Palate
On the tongue, the 2022 Marienburg Riesling Großes Gewächs “Rothenpfad” displays immense freshness, with lime, kumquats, and a fine, tart grapefruit note. Its acidity is present yet wonderfully framed; the long finish seduces with bite, fine tannins, and a salty note. A true long-distance runner with enormous aging potential, a true revelation, especially after a few years of aging.

Score: (92-94)
The 2022 Pündericher Marienburg Grosses Gewächs Rothenpfad is the area above the viaduct with red-colored slate; these were parcels that had fallen fallow, but the Busch family was able to unite several parcels, re-cultivate and build a monorail track. The GG is made from vines between 70 and 100 years old, not the newer plantings. The nose is of red apple, with a smattering of pepper and subtle yarrow. The very fine palate tingles with spice, hints of saltiness and notions of tangerine peel with a pithy, textural streak, adding an extra dimension and beautiful depth. Long and elegant. (Bone-dry)
