Information

If you walk through the Rothenpfad in the summer heat, your boots will later be covered in red dust. The name says it all. The vineyard above the Pünderich viaduct is characterized by slate and iron oxide, which colours the stone. The southeastern exposure plays a positive role, especially in hot years. The site was already ranked first in the 150-year-old vineyard map of the Mosel, Saar, and Ruwer. After harvesting and sorting, the grapes, most of which are more than 80 years old, are given an extended maceration period and are pressed very slowly under low pressure and fermented spontaneously. Clarification takes place through sedimentation. Apart from small additions of sulfur, nothing else is added. The wine is aged in traditional Moselle 1,000-liter barrels. The Grandes Gewächses are usually filled in late summer.

Nose

The Marienburg »Rothenpfad« 2021 reveals itself with freshness and clarity. Light floral, herbal, and slate notes dominate the opening. Added to this are some stone fruit, citrus fruit, and the reds so typical of the site, as well as a few white currants. The light smoke that hangs over everything gives the wine a dark appearance.

Palate

On the palate, this Grosses Gewächs initially reveals white, full, juicy, and sweet fruit, which, with exposure to air, increasingly reveals stone and spice, as well as some tobacco, kumquat and grapefruit peel, spices, and salt. Here, too, the wine appears dark in its stoniness and minerality. This creates a balancing counterpoint to the light fruit. In addition to the clear acidity, the fine, slightly crumbly tannin is impressive.
