Information about the wine

This is the first Großes Gewächs (Great Growth) from this once well-known, but now forgotten, location above Neustadt an der Weinstraße. The vineyard came to the Christmanns through an exchange in 2017 after years of conventional farming. The conversion to biodynamics followed immediately. For several years, the wine was bottled as a VDP.Ortswein under the name Neustadt V. The soil consists of shell limestone that formed more than 200 million years ago. The vineyard slopes quite steeply to the south with an incline of up to 50% and lies at an altitude of up to 260 meters. Yields here are only 40 hl/ha, allowing the grapes to achieve optimal flavour. The juice stood on the skins for several hours, fermented spontaneously and at a relatively warm temperature, and aged in large double-barreled barrels.

Nose

Year after year, Vogelsang continues to develop into one of the region’s great Rieslings. The 2023 example is another energetic, absolutely powerful wine, but also not as purist as in the last two years. I like this one very much. It seems fresh, juicy, vibrant, darkly spicy, light-toned and citrusy in the fruit, tart and zesty.

Palate

On the palate, this Großes Gewächs initially appears taut and sinewy, but then a very light, charming extract sweetness emerges, as well as a hint of creaminess – like a sweet spot in a salty sea breeze. At the same time, there is a lot of punch, an acidity that is crystalline, yet, in keeping with the vintage, more charming than the previous year. A lot is happening here; the wine appears cool, firm, and wild with its rock, tobacco, and herbal aromas.
