A whopping 3.9 hectares of the 6.5 hectare site belong to the Christmann family. The Pinot Noir vines were planted in 1977 and 2008. The Pinot Noir grows in the upper part of the Idig. In 2008, a French clone from a Massale selection was added. The Idig rests on a limestone massif from the Tertiary period. The topsoil consists of terra fusca, which was formed from limestone and clay. However, it also contains limestone and basalt from the Forster Pechsteinkopf, an ancient volcano. The von Buhl family from Deidesheim, former owners of these plots in the Idig, had basalt stones brought there 150 years ago. The harvest took place on September 18 and 19, 2021. Spontaneous fermentation with 10% whole bunches. The wine was aged in barriques until February 2023 and finally bottled in May. 10% of the barrels were first-fill barrels.

Colour

Bright cherry red with a dark core and lighter rim.

Nose

This Pinot Noir from the VDP. Große Lage Idig in Königsbach is a force to be reckoned with. It presents itself in its darkest form and is enormously appealing. Its grandeur and elegance are evident from the very first moment. Plum, morello cherry, and sweet cherry set the tone. Raspberry, blackberry, and earthy, sweet beetroot can also be detected. Its fruit seems to be wrapped in tissue paper. The scent of light and dark red to black blossoms hangs in the air. A hint of cedarwood, forest floor, and moss create intense aromas. These are also supported by juniper, black pepper, and cardamom. Coriander seeds, as well as chervil, sage, and rosemary, contrast with invigorating herbal nuances. With a subtly nutty aroma of almond and walnut, it seems never-ending. It’s best to start again from the beginning.

Palate

On the palate, it combines grandeur with lightness and finesse. It builds up dark and spicy. However, it is also characterized by taut acidity, a robustness, and great astringency, making it both an appealing drink and fresh. My glass empties at a rapid pace, so I immediately have to refill it. Despite its compact, punchy acidity, it flows silky and elegantly over the lips. Every drop is a pleasure, full of intensity and a certain density of texture and aromas. Spice, fruit, earthiness, acidity, and bitterness are in perfect harmony with one another. Its fine tannins provide very stimulating bitterness, which, together with its earthy, tart fruit, is very stimulating. It lingers for minutes, seemingly never-ending. Simply a great wine, with the finesse of a cool vintage. This coolness is also expressed in its slender appearance.
