Product description for Christmann IDIG Königsbach Spätburgunder GG VDP Grosse Lage 2020 (bio)
Wine Information
The Idig is one of the most exquisite vineyards in the Palatinate and represents the heart of the Christmann winery. The vineyard has a monopoly size of 4 hectares, which is due to the over 400 years of ownership by the Counts Palatine. The site slopes steeply to the south-southeast, but is protected from cold winds by a gentle breeze from the Klausental valley. The soil consists of terra fusca and lies on a massive limestone massif. Christmann’s Idig Spätburgunder grows in two plots in the upper part of the vineyard, both on old vines and on a smaller area with French clones.
Information about the winemaking
The grapes are carefully harvested by hand, using only fully ripe, healthy berries. Yields are low, usually 25-30 hl/ha, to ensure optimal flavor. The berries are carefully transported to the winery as whole bunches and partially destemmed. Approximately 30% to 50% of the grapes remain undestemmed and are fermented as whole bunches, which gives the wine a fine tannin. During the cold maceration of 5 days at 12°C, the grapes are gently poured over daily to release the color from the berries. Fermentation then takes place on the skins for two weeks, with peak temperatures reaching up to 30°C. Aging takes place for 18 months in barriques, usually 10% new wood, the rest used. After tasting and blending the barrels, the wine usually rests for about 3 months in stainless steel for final maturation.
Color
Muted garnet red with a violet core.
Nose
The 2020 Spätburgunder Königsbacher Idig Großes Gewächs impresses with its power and mineral depth. Aromas of sour cherries, cassis, wild raspberries, and chalky notes blend with smoky and herbal notes to create an impressive aroma.
Palate
The wine spreads across the tongue and impresses with its rich fruit, refreshing sour cherry notes, and invigorating acidity. The delicate tannin structure lends the wine charm and elegance. This Pinot has a feminine appeal and captivates the senses, pairing perfectly with classic dishes.

The 2020 Idig Königsbach Spätburgunder Grosse Lage is deep, intense and toasty on the nose that combines and black berry and cherry aromas with notes of iodine, nougat and toast. Silky, fresh and saline on the palate, this is a pure, fresh and tensioned Pinot with a slightly drying, brittle finish.Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022.
