The Schlössel vineyard in Gimmeldingen borders the Meerspinne to the north. Christmann owns 0.9 hectares in this VDP (Vintage German Vineyard), a prime vineyard site. Its gentle slope faces east and tilts north. The cold air from the Gimmeldingen Valley is only noticeable in faint drafts. The soil is a mixture of limestone loess and red sandstone scree. In 2017, this vineyard was converted to Pinot Noir. It has been in production again since 2019. The grapes were harvested on September 18, 2021. Spontaneous fermentation with 10% whole bunches was used. With 20% new oak, the wine was aged in barriques until February 2022 and finally bottled in May 2023.
Colour
Radiant, dark cherry red with delicate bluish reflections
Nose
The nose of the Gimmeldinger Schlössel Spätburgunder still appears quite restrained. Its fruit is exemplary and, thankfully, offers plenty of contrast. In addition to wild strawberries and sour cherries, there are also hints of morello cherry and raspberry. From the herbal corner, there are intense notes of lovage, savory, and parsley. These intense herbal nuances mingle with the fruit, enhancing it thoroughly. This ethereal spiciness provides backbone and length. Tart nuances such as forest floor or juniper can also be wonderfully integrated.
Palate
These very successful impressions from the nose are carried seamlessly onto the palate. Its fruit is immediately present. With a perfectly integrated, yet high-quality acid structure, the fruit is kept small. But that doesn’t matter at all, and it greatly enhances the overall experience. Its fruit, in the form of sour cherries and morello cherry, is crisp and fresh. Here, too, all sorts of tart and ethereal nuances come to the fore. Lovage reigns supreme, supported by ample mint. Juniper and pepper are perfectly represented from the spicy side. A subtle earthy note, slightly reminiscent of forest floor, characterizes the finish alongside the fruit.
