Product description for Christmann Gimmeldinger Biengarten Spätburgunder VDP Erste Lage 2021 (bio)
Since 1996, the winery has been run by Steffen Christmann, the 7th generation. In 2004, the Christmanns finally committed to biodynamic farming. The goal is to produce wines that reflect the vineyard, taste like it, and could not be produced anywhere else in the world. The harmony of vine, vineyard, and winemaker results in magnificent wines of great individuality. The ideal conditions in the traditional Palatinate Mittelhaardt region, warm enough for full-bodied wines and cool enough for elegance and a fine minerality, form the basis. The Grosse Lagen Idig, Meerspinne im Mandelgarten, Langenmorgen, and Reiterpfad-Hofstück in particular produce Grosse Gewächse (Great Growths) that are consistently ranked among the best in Germany.

The Biengarten in Gimmeldingen is a VDP (Vineyard of German Wines). Erste Lage (First Location). The site stretches across steep terraces and slopes from Gimmeldingen to Königsbach along the edge of the forest. A gentle hollow protects the site from cold winds. The soil contains tertiary limestone marl, and the site sits on the same limestone reef as the VDP (VDP) large vineyards of Idig and Ölberg. The old vines were planted in 1982 and bear only a few grapes, with very loose berries. The Christmann family owns 1.1 hectares, facing east and east-south, with a 10% gradient. The harvest took place on September 21, 2021. Fermentation was spontaneous with 10% whole bunches. With 10% new oak, the wine was aged in barriques until February 2022 and finally bottled in May 2023.
Colour
Dark, luminous cherry red with a lighter rim
Nose
This Pinot Noir from the VDP.Erste Lage Gimmeldinger Biengarten starts off very ambivalently. Dark and light. Appearing light, yet full of depth. Wild strawberries as well as sweet and sour cherries all at once. Mulberry, raspberry, and elderberry can also be discovered here. However, all its fruit is (still) wrapped under a dark, floral veil. Behind the veil, spicy aromas of all colours can be detected. Clove, pepper, juniper, and allspice are quiet and restrained. It has tart, nutty characteristics. Earthy and profound in the form of forest floor, red earth, and a touch of chalk. Its herbal spice is still very subtle and restrained.
Palate
It flows silky and delicately over the lips. Its incredible acidity immediately sets in. This powerfully pushes the wine along. With its high astringency, no glass stays full for long. It generates an incredible flow. This Pinot Noir from Christmann fluctuates between juiciness and completely contrasting austere elements. Its fruit is now much darker and marries with the floral aromas. They burst forth together in a concentrated burst to conquer the palate. The finish is reminiscent of freshly broken branches, smelling lush green yet not denying their woody nature. Or simply the combination of slightly smoky accents with abundant fruit and light herbal freshness.
