Product description for Christmann “Aus den Lagen” Riesling 2023 (bio)
Info
In spring 2022, Christmann’s product range changed radically. Instead of estate and village wines, there is now only one additional wine per variety, alongside our single-vineyard wines. These wines come from our best vineyards, are hand-picked, spontaneously fermented, and carefully blended. They represent the winery’s style and their way of making wine. The vineyards for the “aus den Lagen” (from the vineyards) are all classified as Erste Lage (First Location) or Große Lage (Grand Location) in the VDP (German Wine Region). This wine of origin therefore corresponds more to the idea of a second wine, arranged among the vineyards. Harvested from the Gimmeldingen (Kapellenberg and Meerspinne), Ruppertsberg (Linsenbusch and Reiterpfad), Neustadt (Vogelsang), and Königsbach (Idig and Ölberg) vineyards, concentrated Mittelhaardt terroir goes into the bottle. The year 2023 was long and rewarding, full of periods of beautiful weather. The long-awaited rain in July and August later became a risk. The grapes absorbed so much water that they threatened to burst and then rot. Just in time for the start of the harvest, a long period of good weather set in at the beginning of September, a golden late summer, so everything went well. The grapes were sorted by hand. The results were magnificent.
Colour
Light straw yellow with green reflections
Nose
It has an incredibly subtle and mysterious aroma. It has discreet traces of nashi pear and white peach. Lime zest provides freshness. The herbs are also loudly present. Chervil, lemon balm, sage, sorrel, lemongrass, and mint ensure a long-lasting feeling of closeness to nature and depth. It also shows vegetal notes with fennel greens and pea shoots. A very elegant Riesling. It can also reveal chopped almonds and star anise. It strikes me as purist, lean, clear, and linear.
Palate
On the palate, it is incredibly balanced. The acidity pushes it forward. It is never overpowered, as the acidity integrates very well with the fruit. This very fruit component now presents itself even brighter and more timidly on the palate. The green nuances are by no means loud, but they still clearly determine the flavour profile. Stony and purist. A very mature sip of Riesling that flows linearly. A solid wine of origin that leaves nothing to be desired in its class.

The 2023 Riesling Aus den Lagen opens with intense, ripe and aromatic fruit intermingled with earthy notes. Round and elegant on the palate, this is a fine and juicy, savory and saline, stimulating light and tensioned Riesling sourced from classified vineyards. A classic. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2024.

The 2023 Riesling Aus den Lagen was harvested across the estate’s single sites, with about a fifth from Idig. It is made 70% in various sizes of wood and the rest in stainless steel. A whiff of reduction blends with lemon on the nose. The palate is smooth and bright on a slender, fluid, linear body that is taut and crunchy. The finish is citric, vivid and bone dry. This is quite a mouthful of wine, concentrated, lip-smacking and beautiful. (Bone-dry)
