Product description for Chiara Boschis, E.Pira & Figli Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2020 (bio)
At the beginning of the 1980s, no heirs emerged from the Pira family tree. The continuation of the winemaking history was ensured by the Boschis family. The Boschis have been deeply rooted in the renowned Barolo wine-growing region since the mid-18th century. With Chiara and Giorgio Boschis currently in charge, the ninth generation is now in charge. One of the Boschis’ self-imposed goals is to pay the greatest possible attention to the vines. To protect and preserve the environment and nature as best as possible, the Boschis follow the guidelines of organic viticulture. Work in the cellar is almost secondary, as they wholeheartedly allow nature to take its course and exert as little influence as possible on the developing wine.
Info
The grapes actually come predominantly from the DOCG regions of Barolo and Barbaresco and are grown on limestone marl. The vines are between 10 and 45 years old, and the vines are trained in wire-frame systems at medium planting density. Vinification follows a selective, manual harvest in individual batches depending on the location or plot. Whole grapes are used for one-quarter, and the remainder is destemmed. A short cold maceration takes place in stainless steel, followed by maceration with pump-over. The skins and pomace remain in contact with the wine for almost four weeks.
Colour
Bright cherry red with many light reflections and dark accents.
Nose
Chiara Boschis and her team have once again succeeded in combining this typical Nebbiolo fruit with spice and elegance in 2020. The Langhe Nebbiolo opens darkly, yet incredibly openly. Blackberry, sour cherry, and mulberry meet fresh fig and currant. Juniper and black pepper provide plenty of spice. It is earthy, characterized by undergrowth and fir branches. Ethereal nuances emerge in the form of eucalyptus, thyme, and pine needles. Roasted hazelnuts and fresh coffee beans round it off with angularity. And those edges are magnificent.
Palate
This can be enjoyed in large sips. The Langhe Nebbiolo shows off its full potential on the palate. Cool elegance, fine minerality, and a harmonious tannin structure. The fruit emerges as small berries with a pleasant acidity. It appears mysterious and dark. But many accents also have a brightening effect. The roasted aromas and the tannin, along with the sour cherry, set the tone. The tannin is positively brittle and animates the other elements enormously. Nebbiolo can be so sexy in this form. The acidity really grips the palate and elevates the drinking flow to a new level.
