Product description for Chiara Boschis, E.Pira & Figli Barolo Via Nuova DOCG 2020 (bio)
Info
2020 was a strange year in many ways. Spring started 15 days ahead of the long-term average. Severe thunderstorms in June and heavy rainfall in September, combined with a sharp drop in temperature at night, slowed this process again, thus relativizing this lead. This combination of sufficient warmth, plenty of daylight, and cool nights promoted a slow, regular ripening process in the vineyard. The grapes were able to express the aromas of clear fruit combined with sufficient sugar, tannins, colour, and balanced acidity. The yield was 30-40% lower than in a normal year. In this year of extremes, the winegrowers were concerned about the pandemic, Brexit, and all the related export aspects. However, their work in the vineyard was never affected, and this remained their full focus. This meant that all treatments in the vineyard could always be applied in good time before the rainfall. The winery is located in the village of Barolo. The grapes are fermented 100% in stainless steel tanks. Remontage and pigeage are frequently used during vinification. The wines are then aged in small French oak barriques. The toasting is rather light, and the proportion of new oak is approximately 30%. This is followed by one year of aging in bottle. The methodology is identical for all Baroli wines, thus giving the wine its proper place, not its method. Via Nuova is a blend of seven vineyards spread over 3.7 hectares. These include Terlo, Paiagallo, and Liste in Barolo; Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi in Monforte d’Alba; and Gabutti e Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba. The average elevation is 340 meters and the wines have a variety of south-southeast exposures. The harvest began on September 29, 2020, and 14,826 bottles and 278 magnums were filled.
Colour
Dark cherry red with violet reflections and rusty inclusions.
Nose
The Barolo Via Nuova 2020 skillfully combines the darker sides of the aromatic world. Lilac and pansies wonderfully embrace the fruit. Elderberry, cassis, and blackberry provide the darkest fruit. A hint of plum is a perfect match. Spicy components such as cubeb pepper and black pepper await us. In dried form, marjoram, oregano, and sage provide a subtle but important herbal spice that lingers. Cedarwood and a touch of forest floor and moss then introduce further layers of balsamic notes.
Palate
From the first sip, it demonstrates how it can showcase all of these characteristics and aromas. At this young age, the tannin structure is still somewhat brittle, but the acidity and cool minerality provide ideal sparring partners. This cool appearance makes the fruit appear significantly fresher and lighter. Aromas of sour cherry and raspberry also add considerably more finesse. It flows silkily across the palate. Its spiciness is much more subdued in the mouth, but in excellent harmony with the fruit. The tannins develop significantly more finely within just a few minutes.

The E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Via Nuova opens to a little more dark fruit and ripe berry in this vintage. The wine is buttoned up from all sides into a tight little package of aromas. You get orange peel, bright cherry and a fragrant springtime fruit blossom. There are hints of herb, tar, violet and chalky mineral. The tannins are finely polished and smooth. This is a 15,000-bottle release.
