Description

Product description for Chiara Boschis, E.Pira & Figli Barolo Mosconi DOCG 2020 (bio)

Christina Hilker: Attack on the palate: plenty of dark fruit, with blackberries, plums, and sloe joining the fruity notes of the nose, wrapped in ripe yet youthful tannins and a very invigorating acidity. A very harmonious Barolo with fantastic aging potential that will wonderfully unfold its full splendour with a little patience and cellar aging.

Info

2020 was a strange year in many ways. Spring began 15 days ahead of the long-term average. Heavy thunderstorms in June and heavy rainfall in September, combined with a sharp drop in temperature at night, slowed this process again, thereby relativizing this lead. This combination of sufficient warmth, plenty of daylight, and cool nights forced a slow, regular ripening process in the vineyard. The grapes were able to express the aromas of clear fruit combined with sufficient sugar, tannins, colour, and balanced acidity. The yield was 30-40% lower than in a normal year. In this year of extremes, the winegrowers were concerned about the pandemic, Brexit, and all the related export aspects. However, their work in the vineyard was never affected, and this remained their full focus. This meant that all vineyard treatments could always be carried out in good time before the rains. The winery is located in the village of Barolo. The grapes are fermented 100% in stainless steel tanks. Remontage and pigeage are frequently used during vinification. The wines are then aged in small French oak barriques. The toasting is rather light, and the proportion of new oak is around 30%. This is followed by a year of aging in bottle. The method is identical for all Barolis, thus giving the winery a spotlight on their origins rather than their production. The Mosconi vineyard is one of the oldest MGAs in Monforte d’Alba and, at Chiara Boschi’s, covers 1.9 hectares. The vines are located at an altitude of 370 meters and are completely exposed to the south. The harvest began quite late on October 2, 2020, and 9,826 bottles and 278 magnums were filled.

Colour

Dark, dense cherry red with delicate violet reflections.

Nose

For me, Chiara Boschis’s Mosconi vineyard in Barolo always represents a dark representative of its origins. This was no different in 2020. The good thing about it is that, although its spiciness is distinctive, it is wonderfully embedded in the fruit. Juniper, pepper, and clove are prominent. These spices are complemented by fresh rosemary, thyme, and sage. Roasted coffee and dark chocolate underscore these dark thoughts. A hint of black truffle and damp forest floor spring to mind. Undergrowth, dark tobacco leaves, and a hint of licorice complete this excursion into the spicy world. Sweet cherries, blackberries, and elderberries are at the back. The fruit is essential, but never pushes itself into the foreground. An absolute equilibrium of a harmonious nose.

Palate

Chiara Boschi’s team conveys precisely these impressions into the glass and thus to our palates. It builds with power and strength. Its tannins are finely grained, yet unobtrusive. This ensures great elegance and leaves plenty of room to showcase its free mineral structure. Fortunately, its acidity also plays a key role. The fruit is kept small, and the drinking flow barometer rises. Perfectly accentuated, spicy aromas repeatedly stand out, so that the fruit really has to fight for every minute. This wonderful interplay of aromas and acidity continues for minutes. A great, dark Barolo full of elegance and length.

Wine Advocate

Score: 96

The E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Mosconi has some of the extra ripeness of the vintage with cherry cream syrup, grenadine, watermelon candy and a drop of Pastis. The wine ends on a powerful note with a balanced combination of fruit and fine oak tannins. The palate is very alive, and the fruit feels very vibrant at this young stage. Some 9,000 bottles were made.
