Product description for Chiara Boschis, E.Pira & Figli Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2020 (bio)

Info

2020 was a strange year in many ways. Spring started 15 days ahead of the long-term average. Severe thunderstorms in June and heavy rainfall in September, combined with a sharp drop in temperature at night, slowed this process again, thus relativizing this lead. This combination of sufficient warmth, plenty of daylight, and cool nights promoted a slow, regular ripening process in the vineyard. The grapes were able to express the aromas of clear fruit combined with sufficient sugar, tannins, colour, and balanced acidity. The yield was 30-40% lower than in a normal year. In this year of extremes, the winegrowers were concerned about the pandemic, Brexit, and all the related export aspects. However, their work in the vineyard was never affected, and this remained their full focus. This meant that all treatments in the vineyard could always be applied in good time before the rainfall. The winery is located in the village of Barolo. The grapes are fermented 100% in stainless steel tanks. Remontage and pigeage are frequently used during vinification. The wines are then aged in small French oak barriques. The toasting is rather light, and the proportion of new oak is approximately 30%. This is followed by a year of aging in bottle. The method is identical for all Baroli wines, thus giving prominence to the origin rather than the method. Not far from the winery is the Cannubi vineyard. Chiara Boschis owns 0.7 hectares of this top-class vineyard, and the vines grow on calcareous soils from the Tertiary period. The vineyard is located at an altitude of almost 300 meters and faces south and southwest. The harvest began on September 22, 2020, and 3,774 bottles and 340 magnums were produced.

Colour

Brilliant, dark cherry red with a dense core and delicate violet reflections.

Nose

2020 Barolo Cannubi is a sleeping giant. Still deep in hibernation, it takes a while to awaken it. A large glass and some time in the carafe are recommended. The fruit then slowly builds up in a very subtle way. Sour cherry, blackberry, and plum are prominent. Fresh rosehip and red fruit tea also come to mind. Cigar box, light tobacco leaves, and colourful pepper provide plenty of spice. Sage, parsley, and thyme envelop it in an ethereal shell. Its aromas of pine, cypress, and pine also follow this direction. Imbued with plenty of earthiness, it arouses great excitement at the first sip.

Palate

A truly great wine makes its way across my palate. Sublime and proud, it displays its strengths. A fine-grained tannin accompanies it, coating the mouth and making it indispensable. So harmonious and elemental. The fruit flows silky smooth over the lips. It benefits from its incredibly delicate acid structure, which never intrudes, but quietly sets the pace. The fine mineral side runs linearly and seems to never stop. The fruit remains subtle, tending more on the crisp side. The balsamic and ethereal nuances are in perfect harmony with one another. They continue this elegantly for minutes on end. A hint of cocoa then comes to the fore at the end.

Wine Advocate

Score: 97

The E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Cannubi is a fine and delicate wine, although there is a little more grit and richness in this warm vintage. The quality of the fruit is exceptional, especially its crisp ripeness. Dark cherry, blackcurrant, rose blossom, pink pepper and white limestone add considerable high-toned notes. The freshness is great and the fruit stays juicy, fueling a long, elegant finish. Only 4,000 bottles were made.
