Product description for Château de Pibarnon Château de Pibarnon Rouge AOC 2020 (bio)Provence is certainly not short of stunningly beautiful locations. But anyone who has ever visited Château Pibarnon in the Bandol appellation knows the magic of this winery and its terraced vineyards, from which one can see the nearby Mediterranean. In 1989, Eric de Saint Victor took over management of the estate from his father and developed it into one of the best in Provence. The qualified biologist runs the winery organically using biodynamic methods. Five wines are produced in the old cellar vaults: a rare Bandol Blanc and the wines for which the appellation is world-famous: Bandol Rouge and Bandol Rosé, each vinified as a Vin de Garde from 100% Mourvèdre, as well as cuvées that open significantly earlier.
Information about the wine
Pibarnon Bandol Rouge is a cuvée of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache. Yields are around 30 hl/ha. The vines are planted in an “amphitheater” facing the sea, planted on clay, limestone, and chalk from the Triassic period. Only the best and oldest vines at an average altitude of 250 meters are used for this Vin de Garde. Fermentation lasts around three weeks. The wines are then aged plot by plot in specially selected barriques, tonneaux, and foudres of various origins for 20 months.

Nose
An ethereal scent hangs over the 2020 Bandol Rouge. It is reminiscent of lavender, roses, mint, and juniper in interplay with ripe cherries, plums, blackberries, and a touch of elderberry. Added to this are nuances of blood orange and a hint of vanilla. Without question, this wine is one of the more modern representatives of the appellation, but also one of those that strikes a very sexy note from the very beginning.
Palate
This is true not only in the aromas, but also in the mouthfeel. Given enough time and air in the carafe, the Bandol is already a charmer – despite its undeniably distinctive acidity and tannins. This blend of ripe black cherry, crisp plum, light licorice, cinnamon, and vanilla with hints of tonka bean, violet, and pepper is simply very seductive, especially since this elegant and robust wine has a pleasantly cool, fresh vein and a beautiful length.
