Product description for Château de Pibarnon Château de Pibarnon Rouge AOC 2018 Provence is certainly not short of stunningly beautiful locations. But anyone who has ever visited Château Pibarnon in the Bandol appellation knows the magic of this winery and its terraced vineyards, from which one can see the nearby Mediterranean. In 1989, Eric de Saint Victor took over management of the estate from his father and developed it into one of the best in Provence. The qualified biologist runs the winery organically using biodynamic methods. Five wines are produced in the old cellar vaults: a rare Bandol Blanc and the wines for which the appellation is world-famous: Bandol Rouge and Bandol Rosé, each vinified as a Vin de Garde from 100% Mourvèdre, as well as cuvées that open significantly earlier.

Nose

Pibarnon’s Bandol is simply a bank. Dark fruits, plenty of balsamic spice, and finesse come together skillfully here. Tar, licorice, and graphite create dark, yet ethereal and cooling aromas. Added to this are plenty of juniper spice, rosemary, and dark chocolate alongside roasted coffee beans. This may all sound intense and dense, but the 2018 Bandol comes across as delicate and elegant. It features abundant notes of sour cherry, blackberry, raspberry, and cassis. Inviting and generous.

Palate

From the very first sip, the Mourvèdre confirms the expectations from the nose. Juicy, cool, full of finesse, and with plenty of fruit expression. It is taut, lean, and has a good flow. The graphite note puts it in a linear, additionally cooling corset. It handles the 14.5% ABV and the warm, clearly Mediterranean climate perfectly. Great balance, so juicy and delicious to drink. In the aftertaste, the fruit becomes subtle and racy again. Please, more of it, and more often.
