Product description for Château de Béru Chablis Clos Béru Monopole AOC 2020 (bio)
Wine Information
The Clos de Béru vineyard is the house’s monopoly site. The only reason the Clos de Béru is not classified as a Premier Cru in Chablis is because it was leased at the time of Comte Eric de Béru’s untimely death, and the family showed no interest in classification. Historically, the Clos de Béru has always been considered on a par with good Premier Cru sites. When you stand in the vineyard, it’s immediately clear why: pure, south-facing, not very steep, but quite sloping and very stony, typical Kimmeridge soil. The boundaries were originally drawn by the monks along the terroir. This is why the Clos does not have a uniform shape, but rather that of a slanted trapezoid. The wine is aged in tonneaux for the first year, then in tanks (Christoph Raffelt).
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
The 2020 Chablis Clos Béru reveals itself after decanting with a fruity and mineral firework. Precise fruit notes of citrus, sugared grapefruit, quince, apricot, and honeydew melon meet cool, stony notes, seaweed, and dried oyster shell. The whole is perfectly interwoven with cereal notes, dried pastries, almonds, and a hint of light tobacco, as well as distinct herbal notes. The finest aromas of porcini mushrooms and brioche underscore its Burgundian character. It’s hard to find a more purist and clearly defined Chablis. A wine that, even upon first smell, begs to be sipped on the tongue, but which will also benefit from further ageing.
Palate
The fireworks of the nose continue on the tongue. Taut, chalky, and clearly structured, it pleasantly challenges us. Its salty notes and pronounced acidity leave you salivating and wanting more. A wine that presents itself perfectly, with a straightforward, incredibly beautiful, and powerful fullness that is unparalleled. My advice for the impatient: Buy it by the case now and follow its magnificent development over the next few years! Enjoy decanted, not too cold, from a large glass; a few days of opening will allow it to truly excel!
