Product description for Chandon de Briailles Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru “Les Lavières” rouge AOC 2020 (bio)
The Chandon de Briailles winery in Savigny les Beaune is run by siblings Claude and François de Nicolay. François oversees the vineyards and sales, while Claude reigns supreme in the cellar. The estate owns prime parcels of land in Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, such as Aloxe-Corton and Corton-Charlemagne. They are convinced that great terroir wines can only be produced through biodynamic farming, which they have practiced since 2005. Although the various vineyards are not far apart, they differ significantly in soil and climate. Their primary goal is to bring out these distinct characters and showcase them perfectly. They succeed in doing so impressively. All of their wines possess depth and complexity, and above all, a great deal of individuality.
Wine Information
The Pinot Noir comes from the Premier Cru Les Lavières vineyard below Talmettes in Savigny-lès-Beaune. The municipality is located around three and a half kilometers northwest of Beaune and, with 383 hectares, boasts one of the most extensive vineyards in the region. The Premier Cru Les Lavières vineyard is located towards Pernand-Vergelesses. Domaine Chandon de Briailles owns 2.61 hectares at the heart of the 17.66-hectare vineyard, which is named after the laves, flat limestone boulders that were formerly used as roof tiles in Burgundy. The vines are around 50 years old and are planted with a south-southeast exposure on soils consisting of a mixture of sandstone, sand, and marl with iron-rich oolite in the upper areas and reddish-brown, crumbly limestone in the lower areas. Spontaneous fermentation took place in a wooden cuvée with a large proportion of whole bunches. The wine was then transferred by gravity to barriques and tonneaux with a small proportion of new wood. This was followed by approximately 14 months of aging without further movement or racking. Bottling took place mostly directly from the barrel with minimal additions of sulfur.

Nose
It is impressive how aromatically consistent this Pinot Noir from the single vineyard Les Lavières in Savigny-lès-Beaune has become over the years. This has not changed in 2020. Notes of preserved cherries and almonds, violets and lavender are evident, with a touch of earth, undergrowth and a hint of blood and yeast. The result is silky fine, elegant and dense, as well as fresh and juicy.
Palate
On the palate, Les Lavières is equally silky and juicy, with plenty of dark fruit and a hint of undergrowth. As in recent years, it offers pleasant ripeness and a sweet fruity touch with subtle Indian spices. The tannins are polished and elegant. A few centimetres provide firmness, while the acidity adds freshness and finesse, further enhanced by the fine minerality of the old vines. This wine is a real charmer, and one can already enjoy it now, while still enjoying its fruity flavour.
