Product description for Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru “Île des Vergelesses” rouge 2019 (bio)
Wine Information
The Pinot Noir comes from the 9.41-hectare Premier Cru Île des Vergelesses vineyard in Pernand-Vergelesses. The vineyard is bordered by Savigny-les-Beaune Les Vergelesses and Pernand-Vergelesses. The quality of the terroir is superior to that of any other Premier Cru vineyard in the area and is practically at Grand Cru level. The terroir of Pernand-Vergelesses, similar to that on the Corton hill, is characterized by siliceous and calcareous red marl with a high iron content. Domaine Chandon de Briailles has 13.31 hectares of east-facing vines, some of which are 40 years old on average, and some are even over 80 years old (from 1938). Spontaneous fermentation took place in a wooden cuvée with 100% whole-bunch grapes. The wine was then transferred by gravity into barriques and tonneaux with a small proportion of new wood. Maturation lasted around 14 months without further movement. The wine was usually bottled directly from the barrel with minimal sulphur content.

Garnet red
Nose
This Pinot Noir from the core Île des Vergelesses vineyard opens with an almost ethereal note of barberry, mint, and myrtle combined with sandalwood, rose petals, sour cherries, oranges, and wild strawberries. There is also a hint of foliage, undergrowth, limestone, and warm earth. In contrast to the rather dark and warm Savignys, this is a wine that is also quite earthy, but more red-fruity and light.
Palate
On the palate, the 2019 Île des Vergelesses is as powerful and punchy as ever. The wine is bursting with energy, has a vibrant minerality, and is permeated by a quite taut acidity. Notes of sour cherries and a few hints of blood orange, barberry, and pomegranate are also evident here. The Pinot Noir also has a firm tannin structure and offers plenty of dry extract. The finish is fresh and tart, yet complex, long-lasting, and surprisingly crystalline. Like 2018, the 2019 Île des Vergelesses is a superb, almost weightless red, but one for which you’ll have to wait a few years. It will be worth it.
