Product description for Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru “Île des Vergelesses” blanc ungeschwefelt, Sans Sulfites Ajoutes AOC 2020 (bio)
Wine Information
The Chardonnay comes from the 9.41-hectare Premier Cru Île des Vergelesses vineyard in Pernand-Vergelesses. The vineyard is bordered by Savigny’s Les Vergelesses and Pernand’s Les Vergelesses. The quality of the terroir is superior to that of any other Premier Cru vineyard in the area and is actually at Grand Cru level. Similar to that on the Corton hill, the terroir of Pernand-Vergelesses is characterized by siliceous and calcareous red marl with a high iron content. In addition to 13.31 hectares of Pinot Noir, Domaine Chandon de Briailles also has one hectare of Chardonnay, planted at a 10,000-vine density in 1985 and 1991. Whole-bunch pressing took place in predominantly neutral, multi-year barriques. The wine fermented spontaneously and remained on its full lees for 14 months without batonnage. It was bottled directly from the barrel without sulfur.
Colour
Slightly cloudy golden yellow
Nose
The 2020 Île des Vergelesses Blanc offers a captivatingly beautiful nose, which initially begins with a very slight reduction but is then replaced by fine oxidation. It aromas of ripe pears, apples, and quinces, as well as ripe citrus fruits with zest, a touch of patisserie, noisette, and white nougat. A hint of slightly smoky wood can be seen in the background.
Palate
The white 2020 Île des Vergelesses is a magnificent, standalone Burgundy. Looking at the wine in the glass, you’d instantly think it’s already well-aged, the colour is so deep. But on the palate, you quickly realize that this isn’t the case. Moreover, I tasted this unsulfured wine over five days, and it wasn’t just stable; it also improved over time. The Chardonnay appears extremely elegant, fine, and juicy, with a ripe, wonderful acidity. The wine is creamy and lush on the one hand, yet lean in the sense of straightforward and precise, with a silky finish and a salty finish. This is a wine with complexity and richness, yet it still seems light and weightless.
