Product description for Chandon de Briailles Pernand 1er Cru “Île des Vergelesses” La vie est Belle ungeschwefelt, sans soufre ajoute 2018 (bio)
Sebastian Bordthäuser: The initial impression is dominated by delicate and persistent tannins, as stimulating as a hot cup of Darjeeling. Silky with an invigorating astringency, they define the palate, completely coating it and also taking the lead aromatically. Delicate roasted notes are reminiscent of salted, buttered dark toast, the orange marmalade standing ready to hand in a small bowl. Soft electronic music pulses in the background, the first rays of sunlight filter through the blinds. Life is beautiful. Domaine Chandon de Briailles was founded in 1834 in Savigny les Beaune and has been managed by François de Nicolay and his sister Claude since 2001. Since 1998, the vineyards have been exclusively organically cultivated, until 2005, when the next step was taken: conversion to biodynamics. After a conversion phase, Chandon de Briailles has been fully certified biodynamic since 2011. The winery cultivates 14 hectares of its own land and is planted exclusively with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – with one exception. The Weissburgunder vines for La vie est Belle were planted by François de Nicolai’s grandfather. Since Chardonnay is the sole measure of all white wine for him, he quickly developed the Weissburgunder as an orange wine in the style of a natural wine. Spontaneous fermentation after a long maceration period and subsequent maturation on the lees before it was bottled unfined and unsulfured.
Colour
Light orange with a satiny opacity.
Nose
The “La vie est Belle” also lives up to its name in the nose, reminiscent of the morning walk home after a blissful night, past the bakery. Fresh, fragrant braided bread with a light sugar glaze, croissants with orange marmalade, roasted hazelnut slivers, and generously salted butter. The fluffy baked goods are complemented by herbal and spicy notes of sage, lemon balm, and bitter orange zest.
