Description
Mauro Montanaro is more than just a winemaker and Calafata more than “just” a winery. It is a wonderful project, in the hills above Lucca, with the foothills of the Apuan Alps to the north and the Mediterranean coast just 20 km away to the west. The estate’s vineyards lied fallow here since the late nineties. Mauro and his friends were able to convince the owners to lease them the vineyards, some of which are up to 90 years old. The inhabitants of the area gradually helped, with more vineyards, equipment, tanks, and barrels. Thus, over the past few years, a project emerged that tells a story of revival, commitment, and cohesion. Today, the three friends produce five great wines from partly autochthonous old grape varieties. They also cultivate 13 ha of vegetable fields, 7 ha of olive trees, and employ 15 people. All of them are political refugees, former drug addicts, or other people who have been marginalised by society.
