Product description for Calafata Figlioduncane, IGT Toscana Rosso 2018 (bio)
Info
Calafata isn’t just a winery. When it comes to wine, it’s more accurately described as a cooperative. It’s a social project and a refuge for the socially disadvantaged or marginalized. Thus, political statements can also be expected here. “Make wine not war” and “In ground we trust” are printed on both the back label and the cork. Clear statements, then. In addition to wine, the estate also cultivates vegetables and olives. The Figlioduncane is a strictly limited-edition Cabernet Sauvignon, produced only in the best vintages and filled exclusively in magnum bottles. In 2018, there were only 256 bottles. It comes from a few rows of Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the higher elevations of Maolina. The grapes are pressed with the feet and later fermented on the skins in a large fermentation vat. The wine is aged for two years in used barriques.
Colour
Dark purple, slightly cloudy, violet reflections
Nose
The nose immediately conveys an earthy and acidic-fruity character. Forest floor, pine cones, and undergrowth also provide plenty of ethereal moments. A hint of cedar wood and cigar box complement this. Hazelnuts and almonds add another sensory layer. Sour cherry, mulberry, plum, and blackberry contribute dark fruit nuances. In the background, juniper, black pepper, cubeb pepper, as well as rosemary and sage, can be discerned. In a mysterious way, 2018 Figlioduncane conveys both rustic and elegant moments.
Palate
On the palate, it appears cool and juicy at the same time. Fortunately, the dark fruit experiences a very well-balanced acid structure. The tannins are pleasantly fine-pored and almost meltingly integrated. On the palate, it also beautifully combines rustic and elegant attributes. The Sangiovese thrives on a racy acidity, which it combines with abundant fruit and spice. The tannins form its backbone and provide tension. The balsamic and ethereal notes clearly come to the fore in the finish. The fruit now takes a back seat.
