Product description for Boris Champy Beaune 1er Cru Vignes Franches AOP 2022 (bio)
In 2019, Boris Champy took over the domaine, founded by Didier Montchovet in 1984. Champy, who previously managed estates such as Dominus in California, Louis Latour, and Clos de Lambrays, took over the domaine, which had already converted to organic and then biodynamic farming in the 1980s, making it the first Demeter-certified winery in Burgundy. The estate now comprises twelve hectares in the once cooler Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, which, for Boris Champy, represents the future of Burgundy due to climate change. The Vignes Franches plot covers only 21 ares, but enjoys a perfect south-facing exposure in the Beaune appellation, which always ripens quite early. The vines here grow on lean clay-limestone soils. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, followed by gentle extraction of predominantly whole bunches in wooden barrels. The wines are aged for an average of 15 months, 80% of which in new barrels from the Eric Millard winery.
Colour
Dark ruby red with a black core.
Nose
The 2022 Vignes Franches Beaune 1er Cru from Boris Champy is extremely present and powerful on the nose. Characterized by the high percentage of whole grapes and the resulting use of oak, which Champy adapts individually to the site. The floral top note is reminiscent of violets and purple lilacs, followed by the fruit register with stone fruit and berries as well as somewhat dark aromas of black cardamom and licorice.
Palate
The attack is also characterized by aging and extraction, but its open-hearted fruit already makes it approachable, even though it is guaranteed to benefit from long bottle ageing. The tannins are taut, tightly knit, and extremely low-textured, making it almost sweet on the tip of the tongue. The ripe acidity permeates the wine like an electric eel with considerable tension. Beneath it all, the fruit shines in a bright ruby red on the palate.

Score: (92-94)
The 2022 Beaune Les Vignes Franches 1er Cru is matured with one Troncais barrel with 70% whole bunches. It has another flattering bouquet, pure brambly redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit, a little baking powder coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with darker fruit than the Aux Coucherias. A little sweeter in style, with black cherries and cracked black pepper on the finish. Superb.
