Product description for Boris Champy Beaune 1er Cru Aux Coucherias AOP 2022 (bio)In 2019, Boris Champy took over the domaine, founded by Didier Montchovet in 1984. Champy, who previously managed estates such as Dominus in California, Louis Latour, and Clos de Lambrays, took over the domaine, which had already converted to organic and then biodynamic farming in the 1980s, making it the first Demeter-certified winery in Burgundy. The estate now comprises twelve hectares in the once cooler Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, which, for Boris Champy, represents the future of Burgundy due to climate change. The name Coucherias derives from the sunset over the vineyards planted in the 1960s. Situated on a steep slope with a magnificent west-facing exposure, the plot is divided into two parts, the smaller of which opens like an amphitheater in an old quarry. The soil is extremely red and clayey, which gives the tannins of this wine a dense texture. The clos is isolated by walls and vegetation, including broom, a heat-loving plant rare in Burgundy. The site has been farmed biodynamically since 1983. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, followed by the gentle extraction of 15% whole bunches in wooden barrels. The wines are aged for an average of 12 months, 50% of which in new barrels.
Colour
Dark ruby red with a black core.
Nose
The 2022 Aux Coucherias, Beaune 1er Cru from Boris Champy is one of the most powerful, darkest wines on the nose, clearly characterized by its tannins. A touch of leather, tobacco, and plenty of high-proof chocolate characterize the aromatic outlines, filled with equally dark fruit reminiscent of Amarena cherry, dark mulberries, and plums.
Palate
On the palate, the wine has a grippy texture and a creamy texture; the tannins are tightly woven and dense, yet low-textured with a naughty, attractive astringency. The whole is filled with extract-rich fruit, which is very generous with an almost sweet core. The overall structure is medium-bodied with a taut nature and excellent manners. A pleasantly expressive, yet approachable Burgundy, mos def new school.
