Product description for Artuke Trascuevas 2021 (bio)
Wine Information
High-quality white wines from Rioja are making a comeback. The Trascuevas is a great example of this development. It is the only white wine in the Artuke winery’s portfolio, and 2021 is only the second vintage. It is 90 percent Viura (Macabeo) and contains small amounts of Malvasia Riojana and Palomino Fino. The grapes come from various vineyards in the Rioja Alavesa and from bush-trained vines over 50 years old. The wine matures for 10 months in 500-liter French oak barrels. Part of the wine is also aged in concrete tanks.
Colour
Light yellow
Nose
The nose has a predominantly floral character and is overall complex. In addition to white blossoms, there are notes of apple and brioche, typical of Viura aged in barrels and on the fine lees. The bouquet is beautifully balanced and intense.
Palate
The attack on the palate is powerful and spicy, and the Trascuevas 2021 feels silky and creamy in the mouth. The smooth texture envelops the rich body and lends the wine great elegance. The wood is superbly integrated, adding complexity to the wine without masking it. The super-juicy finish is particularly stimulating, with notes of red grapefruit that are very citrusy and crisp. This subtle tartness and juicy freshness make you want the next sip. All in all, Trascuevas 2021 is a great blend of new and traditional Rioja styles. The former focuses on freshness and drinkability, the latter on micro-oxidation and complexity through barrel aging.

Score: 94
The first white I tasted from Artuke is the 2021 Trascuevas Blanco, a blend of 90% Viura with 5% each Malvasía Riojana and Palomino Fino from three vineyards in the villages of Baños de Ebro, Samaniego and Ábalos. The clusters were pressed, and the juice fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured in similar proportions in 600-liter oak foudres and concrete tanks for 11 months. It’s expressive, clean and balanced, modern but with clear Rioja typicity, a little balsamic and spicy. It’s serious, very balanced and fresh, super tasty and with a chalky sensation in the finish. It has 13.1% alcohol and has a low pH of 3.04. 4,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2022.
