Product description for Artadi Viñas de Gain Tinto 2021 (bio)
Among the many wineries that have become known far beyond Rioja since the 1980s, Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi occupy a special position. Artadi is among the region’s top wineries, producing wines that have come from purely organic vineyards, now also biodynamically cultivated, since the 1980s. In 1985, several families joined together to form a cooperative, but they disagreed, so two of the families, Lacalle and Laorden, took over the winery. The re-establishment in 1992 marked the beginning of Artadi’s consistent rise. This also included leaving the Rioja Winegrowers’ Association, which is why the term “Rioja” is no longer found on wine labels. Artadi is one of the region’s best wineries, cultivating a more modern style. This is also due to the fact that it owns some of the best sites in Rioja, with vineyards like El Pisón and others.
Information about the Wine
The Artadi winery is one of the most important pioneers and protagonists of the transition in Spain from cellar-influenced to terroir-influenced wines. The single-varietal Tempranillo “Viñas de Gain” is a cross-section of the terroirs of the Basque Rioja. The grapes come from various vineyards in the municipalities of Laguardia and Elvillar. Some sites are located in the warmer Ebro Valley at an altitude of 450 meters, others at up to 700 meters in the cooler climate of the Sierra Cantabria. The soils are partly calcareous, partly clayey, and partly stony. This diversity of terroirs produces a complex and multi-layered wine that exemplifies the Alavesa region. The wine is also certified organic and aged for 12 months in oak barrels.
Colour
Cherry red with a violet rim
Nose
The nose is characterized by a good portion of minerality and Atlantic freshness. Although it initially appears somewhat austere, it is extremely attractive, stimulating, and of great intensity. With increasing contact with air, dark and red fruits unfold. It is recommended to decant this wine at its current young stage.
Palate
The Viñas de Gain 2021 is powerful and grippy on the palate. It is a concentrated and densely structured red wine that is also elegant, juicy, and by no means opulent. The aromas reveal more dark than red fruits, which is typical of the higher elevations of Rioja Alavesa. The chalky tannins characterize the long, attractive finish. Added to this are pointed acidity, a medium body, and an earthy minerality that provides depth. Length, depth, tension, and grip—everything a top wine needs is there. The price-to-enjoyment ratio of this wine is simply fabulous.
