Product description for Artadi Viñas de Gain Tinto 2018 (bio)
Among the many wineries that have become known far beyond Rioja since the 1980s, Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi occupy a special position. Artadi is among the region’s top wineries, producing wines that have come from purely organic vineyards, now also biodynamically cultivated, since the 1980s. In 1985, several families joined together to form a cooperative, but they disagreed, so two of the families, Lacalle and Laorden, took over the winery. The re-establishment in 1992 marked the beginning of Artadi’s consistent rise. This also included leaving the Rioja Winegrowers’ Association, which is why the term “Rioja” is no longer found on wine labels. Artadi is one of the region’s best wineries, cultivating a more modern style. This is also due to the fact that it owns some of the best sites in Rioja, with vineyards like El Pisón and others.
Info
Christoph Raffelt: Artadi’s red Viñas de Gain is a local wine that comes from some of the best locations in Laguardia’s vineyards, such as San Martín, Las Ventas, Castejones, Ribaltayo, and Viejo. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 450 to 700 meters above sea level and are characterized primarily by clay in the topsoil and a limestone base. Although the wine comes from the center of Rioja, the term Rioja has been in vain since the 2015 vintage. Artadi fell out with the Consejo Regulador of Rioja because they considered the body’s quality standards to be too weak. Now all wines are released as table wines. The grapes were harvested by hand in 10-kilo boxes. Fermentation took place spontaneously after a 48-hour cold maceration and then continued for 12 days in large stainless steel fermenters. The wine was aged for 12 months in the same French wooden barrels in which the malolactic fermentation took place.
Colour
Bright purple, delicate violet reflections
Nose
The 2018 Viñas de Gain Tinto has a wonderfully dark, yet cool aroma. Morello cherries, black cherries, and blackberries clearly dominate the aromas. Elderflowers and the scent of rosehip tea add a generous touch. A touch of black pepper and licorice provide a welcome change from this intensely fruity red wine.
Palate
A successful example of how Tempranillo thrives on the chalky hills of northern Spain. The rich fruit appears here, wrapped in silk and elegantly dressed. Full of finesse, it is both taut and juicy. The rich fruit and the fresh elements of acidity and cool mouthfeel harmonize beautifully. The alcohol is very well integrated and imperceptible.
