Information about the Wine
Bodegas Artadi is one of Spain’s absolute top addresses and has pioneered the transition from cellar-influenced to terroir-influenced wines in Rioja. The organically certified single-vineyard wine “La Hoya” comes from a three-hectare, east-facing vineyard in the municipality of Elvillar. We are located here in the higher and cooler part of Rioja Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The 60-year-old Tempranillo vines grow on soils with a high limestone content, along with sandstone and some clay. As with all Artadi wines, the grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously. During aging, the winery increasingly relies on used and larger oak barrels, which gives the wines even greater clarity and an unvarnished elegance.

Cherry red
Nose
The nose presents itself with fresh red, blue, and black fruit, underpinned by cool minerality and herbal aromas. The bouquet is wonderfully balanced; it is stimulating and elegant, offering plenty of individuality.
Palate
La Hoya is a vineyard acquired by Bodegas Artadi in 2017. Since then, the wine has improved with practically every vintage, especially the tannins, becoming ever more refined and elegant. Furthermore, this wine exemplifies the geography of Rioja Alavesa: it combines the dark fruit and rich tannins of wines grown near the Sierra Cantabria with the red fruit and delicacy of wines grown closer to the Ebro. Overall, the 2022 vintage offers a highly attractive combination of lively acidity and expressive primary aromas; The wine is as clear and fresh as a mountain stream, flowing silkily across the palate while simultaneously developing plenty of mineral grip. The whole experience is very energetic, pure, and precise, with a fantastic flow. In terms of value for money, this is perhaps the best of all Artadi single-vineyard wines.

The bottled 2022 La Hoya delivers what it promised last year, after spending two winters in oak, the first one in 500- and 600-liter barrels and the second one in foudre. It’s from an east-facing 3.6-hectare vineyard planted in 1965 on deep and dark soils on hard sandstone, in a hole (that’s what the name means), possibly a lake in the distant past. It combines the fruit of the sandstone with the clout of the silt and is expressive, aromatic and open. It’s clean, harmonious, quite approachable and quite round, with good ripeness and 14.6% alcohol but with good overall freshness. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.

The 2022 La Hoya, a single-varietal Tempranillo from El Villar, leans into oaky flavors, with ripe black cherry and wild herb aromas. Less nuanced than the 2021 due to the warmer year, it delivers moderate freshness, grippy tannins and an intense, distinctly chalky mouthfeel.
