Product description for Artadi La Hoya 2021 (bio)
Information about the Wine
Like few other Spanish bodegas, Artadi represents the transition from cellar-influenced to terroir-influenced wines. Since the 1990s, the winery in the Basque region of Rioja has focused on expressing the character of specific sites in its wines. The organically certified red wine “La Hoya” comes from a 3.3-hectare, east-facing vineyard in the municipality of Elvillar. We are located here in the higher and cooler part of the Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The 58-year-old Tempranillo vines grow on deep, clayey soils. As with all Artadi wines, the grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously. The wine is aged in oak barrels of varying sizes and ages.
Colour
Cherry red with a violet rim
Nose
The La Hoya 2021 has a compact and, despite its youth, already expressive nose with aromas of blackberries, vanilla, and pepper. Mediterranean herbs and floral notes are also present. The overall bouquet is very clean, balanced, and wonderfully fresh, almost sensual.
Palate
The attack is juicy and aromatic, and it is astonishing how lean and agile this wine appears despite its concentration and intensity. The fine-grained, tightly woven tannins and the silky, velvety texture ensure an elegant mouthfeel. Added to this is an earthy minerality that gives the wine impressive complexity. The juicy finish is long and persistent. Overall, this red wine is characterized by freshness, density, and a great flow.

Wine Advocate
Score: 95
The 2021 La Hoya was one of the surprises. The wine has grown a lot and feels serious and elegant, open and expressive, showy and a little exuberant, with a very elegant palate too, seamless, with fine tannins, precise, focused and clean. They feel the vineyard is improving, getting better balanced and delivering better and better grapes and wines with less rusticity and more finesse. 4,000 bottles were filled in May 2023.

The 2021 La Hoya is an impressive new Rioja red. Crafted from 100% Tempranillo sourced from a 1965-planted plot on calcareous soils, it hails from Elvillar de Álava, Rioja Alavesa. This purple-hued wine offers a bouquet of violet, grapefruit and herbs, intertwined with notes of pennyroyal and cherry. On the palate, it is dry, rich and fairly chalky, with a compact and complex finish that maintains primary freshness. This wine exemplifies a terroir-driven approach, also showcasing Artadi’s distinctive, peppery style.
