Description
Thomas Widmann, Giovanni Podini, and Elisabetta Foradori founded the Ampeleia winery in 2002 in the Tuscan Maremma, an unspoilt Mediterranean landscape. The name comes from the Greek Ampelos, meaning ‘the vine’, and it is the centre of attention. When the vineyards were planted, the respective terroir was closely studied. The 33 hectares of vineyards are distributed over three different altitude levels which differ significantly in terms of microclimate and geology. The grape varieties were selected according to the terroir: Cabernet Franc was planted in the high altitude sites, Sangiovese, Alicante Bouschet, and Carignan in the medium ones, while the heat-loving Alicante nero is found near the sea. The wines are getting better, more coherent, and more harmonious every year.
