Product description for Alta Alella Laietà Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2020 (bio)
Info
The cuvée is based on Pansa Blanca (Xarel-lo), Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. The vines are planted at altitudes of 100–220 meters directly on the Mediterranean Sea. Alta Alella grows on Sauló, a sandy granite soil. The wines are oriented southeastward, facing the sun. After the harvest, the best grapes are selected for this wine. Only the juice is drawn off completely without pressure to ensure that the Pinot Noir leaves no trace of color. The must is then fermented in steel tanks and, as the base wine, is then bottled without any additives for a second fermentation. At least 30 months of aging are required before disgorgement. In this case, it was a full 45 months, and the wine was only separated from the lees in February 2025.
Color
The color is bright golden yellow with light elements and a slight rosé tinge. Its perlage is actively bubbling with high intensity and a fine grain.
Nose
On the nose, it combines the classic attributes of its Catalan origins with the sometimes long lees aging. This Gran Reserva Brut Nature was allowed to mature on the lees for 45 months and was disgorged on February 11, 2025. It combines rich, ripe yellow fruit with Mediterranean accents and cool, austere elements. For me, this represents mirabelle plum, apricot, persimmon, and candied quince in their purest form. The quince experiences a spicy note that perfectly complements light oriental aromas. This results in turmeric, cardamom, allspice, and—from the Mediterranean corner—dried thyme, oregano, and freshly chopped almonds. The yeasty nuances shine in the form of toasted brioche spread with salted butter. It appears austere thanks to the stony accents, which appear chalky and puristic. This wine from near Barcelona is highly attractive on the nose, yet still maintains its linearity and elegance. The fruit peeks through repeatedly, but the winemaking and soil set the tone.
Palate
On the palate, it is full-bodied and dense, despite its 0-gram dosage. The carbon dioxide plays an active role on the palate. The mousse is not prominent, but creates a light, creamy character. On the palate, it demonstrates great elegance and lightness. Nevertheless, this wine possesses a certain density and fruit concentration. It appears ripe and yellow-fruity. The oriental and Mediterranean aromas are best expressed retronasally. I find it medium-bodied in its mineral character, but very active in its crisp acidity structure, which contrasts with the intense fruit.
