Sparkling, dark cherry red

Nose

Trossos Vells is based on old Carignan vines in El Masroig in Montsant. The nose has intense, Mediterranean accents. Animal traits, hints of “Brett,” appear, but suit it exceptionally well. Blackberry, sour cherry, cassis, and elderberries provide plenty of dark fruit, which is also incredibly fresh. Rosehip and beetroot provide variety and earthy nuances. Rooibos tea adds a dimension of depth and length. A hint of coconut, along with black pepper, creates light roasted aromas. Black olive and rosemary provide a Mediterranean flair.

Palate

Alfredo Arribas presents us with a dense, yet refined, fine wine. An enormous number of cool and stony attributes give it an elegant character. The fruit is incredibly juicy, but never opulent, rather acidic and taut. Extremely elegant and delicate. Its bloody character supports this idea enormously. The tannins are harmoniously integrated and come across very delicately. With plenty of elegance and flow, no glass stays full for long. Acidity and minerality work together ingeniously. The berry fruit increasingly develops a salty component in the finish. Red fruit tea also comes through in the finish.

The red 2019 Trossos Vells has lactic notes and hints of wax and honey, red berries and aromatic herbs, and it has a medium-bodied palate with moderate ripeness and 14% alcohol. It was produced with Cariñena from eight plots of old vines on red clay soils in the village of Masroig. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels of different sizes for 11 months. It’s a lighter expression of Cariñena with balance and poise, quite approachable. 4,190 bottles were filled in April 2021.
