Product description for Albert Mann Pinot Gris Furstentum Grand Cru 2019 (bio)
Info
The Grand Cru vineyard Furstentum in Kientzheim was first mentioned in 1330. The Pinot Gris vines grow on south-facing limestone slopes and are at least 25 years old. The 2019 vintage began with some challenges for the estate, but turned things around over the course of the summer. The result was brilliant, generous wines that displayed balance and were characterized by striking acid structures. Vinification and aging took place entirely in steel tanks. 3g/l residual sugar meets 4.5g/l acidity.
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow with light and amber reflections
Nose
Pinot Gris can also be different… The nose is initially quite restrained, but full of depth. Candied quince and ginger, caramelized pear, and dried apricot characterize the nose. Bienenstich and arte tatin come to mind. Caramelized apples, roasted almonds, and sponge cake. Despite all these intense nuances, it doesn’t convey the slightest hint of sweetness. That alone is a sensation for me. A hint of flint and cold smoke permeates. The nuances of candied ginger become increasingly stronger. Artichoke, fennel, and yellow beets expand. It seems ethereal, vegetal, and yet earthy. Cardamom, cinnamon, and clove provide plenty of spice. I eagerly await the first sip.
Palate
This dry Pinot Gris from the Grand Cru Fürstentum vineyard boasts an incredible number of layers of flavours and textures. It is neither tame nor intrusive, but simply rests within itself. It radiates wisdom and life experience. It never loses sight of its origins. An honest sip of wine, full of intensity. It conveys the aromatics of the nose very well. Yet it’s wrapped in a silky cocoon. Nothing can escape. The fruit, the spice, its forays into patisserie—everything remains in this elegant structure and in place. With very moderate acidity, it still manages to create a length and quiet grandeur. With every sip, my respect for this achievement grows, without erupting into euphoria. But sometimes, that’s not even necessary…

Bottled in February 2021, the white-golden 2019 Pinot Gris Grand Cru Furstentum offers a very clear, bright, fresh and finely aromatic bouquet of ripe pears, chamomile and crushed limestones. Full-bodied, intense and powerful but also fresh and salty on the palate, this is a dense and edgy, slightly bitter and alcoholic or even clumsy Pinot Gris that hasn’t developed the structural or saline length this terroir deserves but is rather bitter. Normally sourced from three different plots that were picked and pressed together, the 2019 is based on a scaled harvest of the plots that were picked according to their particular ripeness to end up with a dry and digestible Pinot Gris, whereas the former vintages were bottled medium-dry to medium-sweet. 14% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022.
