Description

Product description for Abbatucci Général de la Révolution, Blanc VdF 2017 (bio)

The Abbatuccis are a long-established Corsican family. Their most famous members were General of the Revolution, Diplomate of the Empire, and Ministre Impérial. Today, three of Corsica’s most impressive wines pay tribute to their illustrious ancestors. The move toward the future began in 2000, when Jean-Charles embraced biodynamic farming and focused on the heritage of ancient grape varieties. The domaine’s terroir consists of granite covered with sand and silt, facing north and northeast with slight variations. This exposure naturally ensures freshness and excitement in the wines. The grapes are harvested by hand, and transported to the cellar in crates, where the harvest is systematically selected. Fermentation is carried out by spontaneous yeasts, while the white wines are aged on their lees without stirring, filtering only when necessary. The second top-quality white cuvée is also based on Vermentinu, but this time combined with Rossola Brandica, Riminese, Carcaghjolu Biancu, Biancone, and Paga Debbiti. Production: 4,000 bottles. Vinified in the same way as Diplomate, it presents itself completely differently. “The character of the Général is truly full of tension and minerality, with great length on the palate,” explains Jean-Charles. “If you drink the Général young, it is somewhat discreet; like a general, it won’t reveal itself immediately. However, with age, it gains in dimension while preserving its tension and minerality.” It then displays a variety of aromas, dominated by the herbs of the maquis and citrus fruits. It is extraordinarily stimulating and has a very long finish with a mouthwatering salinity.

Nose

For the second white cuvée in the collection, Jean-Charles Abbatucci blended five native varieties with Vermentinu: Rossola Brandinca, Riminese, Carcaghjolo Bianco, Biancone, and Paga Debbiti. A diverse aroma of herbs and wildflowers such as chamomile, lemon verbena, thyme, and peppermint leads to citrus fruits such as lemon, grapefruit, and clementine, followed by green apples, pear skins, and white peaches: all in all, a surprisingly open, very fresh, and wonderfully stimulating aroma for a Général.

Taste

The Général, from the very sunny 2017 vintage, also surprises in the mouth with immense freshness and power, along with its expressive minerality, which lends it outstanding tension and almost overshadows its silky, creamy texture. Its freshness pairs with very intense, slightly candied citrus aromas, especially citron, and the salty, stony minerality. The result is taut, agile, lean, subliminally vibrant with sublime bitter tones and a stimulating, mouthwatering finish. Sensational!
