Product description for Abbatucci Faustine Vielles Vignes, Blanc VdF 2023 (bio)
Domaine Comte Abbatucci is one of Corsica’s undisputed flagship estates and currently covers 21 hectares on granite soils. In addition to viticulture, the estate also cultivates olives, fruit and vegetables, as well as forestry and has its own restaurant. Abbatucci began as a kind of ark, preserving the old indigenous varieties in the 1960s and 1970s while modern viticulture switched to international varieties. Since French AOC regulations only permit limited use of these varieties, the wines are marketed exclusively as Vin de France, or “Vin de France” (country wine). The estate operates according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture and is Demeter-certified. The 2023 Faustine Rosé Vielles Vignes is a blend of 90% Sciaccarellu and 10% Barbarossa. The grapes for this wine grow at a good 100 meters above sea level on the granite-rich soils of the valley. Yields are rather low at just under 25 hl/ha. The grapes are harvested early in the morning, destemmed, and pressed immediately. The wine is fermented at 18 degrees Celsius and then aged in stainless steel for five months before being bottled unfined and only lightly filtered.
Colour
Light straw yellow, bright and clear.
Nose
Mediterranean aromas thunder from the goblet, like the anti-aircraft searchlight in front of the multi-purpose hall reaching into the night sky. Clear stone fruit notes, clear apple, grapefruit zest, orange blossoms, and beneath them wild, spicy macchia aka garrigue with notes of young rosemary, lavender blossoms, and wild fennel. A hint of peach and a saline sea breeze round out the aromas and make your lips purse expectantly towards the glass.
Palate
On the palate, the 2023 Faustine blanc Vielles Vignes from Abbatucci is characterized by a smooth creaminess that combines its piquant character with a silky viscosity. Aromatically, it oscillates, true to Vermentino, between restrained fruit and herbaceous maquis, restrained acidity, and a generous pinch of salt in the persistent finish. Refreshing and invigorating, refreshing and cooling, it is nourishing and distinctive with a tart character.
