Product description for Abbatucci Alte Rosso Blanc VdF 2019 (bio)The Abbatuccis are a long-established Corsican family. Their most famous members were General of the Revolution, Diplomate d’Empire, and Minister Imperial under Napoleon III. Today, three of Corsica’s most impressive wines pay tribute to these illustrious ancestors. Producing their own wine for home consumption has always been part of the family tradition. However, it was Jean-Charles Abbatucci’s grandfather who laid the foundation for today’s winery a century ago when he planted five hectares of vineyards with Sciaccarellu, Niellucciu, Barbarossa, and Carcaghjolu neru. His father, Antoine, president of the Corsican Chamber of Agriculture, was concerned about the continuation of Corsican viticulture in the 1960s. Therefore, he amassed a unique collection of eighteen native varieties. Jean-Charles took over the estate in 1992, restructured the vineyards, and fenced them in to protect them from wild boars.
Colour
Light, radiant straw gold
Nose
Jean-Charles Abbatucci creates this dry, characterful white wine from the very rare pink Barbarossa grape variety, creating a monument to it. The floral aromas of youth have now given way to the scent of a multitude of tart apples, which immediately fill the nose with a hearty, rural freshness. Added to this are green herbs, yellow gooseberries and peaches, poached pears with a light cinnamon accent, and grilled pineapple, followed by pomelo and subtle notes of smoke and oriental spices.
Taste
A very fresh, yet salty approach with a fine-grained texture, plenty of power, roundness, and the melting quality of a warm vintage. Acidic fruit, ripe apples, a hint of honey, then lemon and orange zest with their subtle bitter tones, before the minerality emerges with notes of earth and flint, as well as iodine, reminiscent of the nearby sea. The freshness extends further into the long finish with its mineral, subtly salty accent.
