Product description for Schätzel Steiner Riesling 17-23 NV
Info
The Steiner Riesling is based on a solera with 8.5% each from 2017 to 2020, 25% from 2021, 25% from 2022, and 16% from 2023. The Riesling vines are all located in prime locations on the Roter Hang: Ölberg, Hipping, and Pettenthal. These six vintages are aging under the flor yeast in 1200 and 5000l barrels. The slopes range from steep to very steep. The Rotliegendes is well-known in this part of the Rhine. The vines are partially hung in a pergola system and primarily in the shade. Naturally, all work is done by hand. After harvest, the grapes are crushed with feet and cold macerated for 24 hours. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation occur spontaneously. This is followed by aging under the flor yeast. The wine matures in barrels in the Solera system for between 12 and 72 months. On average, this bottling matures for at least 32 months.
Colour
Bright lemon yellow with a tendency towards gold and light reflections.
Nose
A very unusual, yet striking and appealing nose flows from the glass. It appears incredibly self-contained and stands very attractively. A very mature glass of Riesling with almost no fruit. It only delicately presents us with Nashi pear, lime zest, and kaffir lime leaves. It thrives on a stony profundity. This opens it up generously, invitingly, but also honestly. Dried herbs in the form of oregano, marjoram, and mint underscore this depth. This is achieved even more by its associations with Sencha tea. Full of complexity, yet simple and subtle. This wine doesn’t need much. Calmness through maturity. A truly unique wine moment.
Palate
With its structure and phenols, it wins me over from the first sip. Plenty of grip and the finest tannins are crucial. Sparse and powerful at the same time. Full of drinking animation, yet challenging. If you accept this duel, you can’t help but be won over. Its pleasant bitterness makes it seem full of tension and possibility. The finish reveals almost no fruit, but instead reveals its austere, consistent character full of ethereal freshness. You can keep yourself occupied with it or simply let it work its magic.
