Product description for Larmandier-Bernier Vieille Vigne du Levant Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 2014 (bio)
Wine Information
When this Champagne was first released in 1988, it was called Vieille Vigne de Cramant. However, since the Larmandiers had to constantly explain Cramant because it was mistaken for Crémant, they eventually renamed this single-vineyard wine. The parcel name for this cuvée is Bourron du Levant. Levant means east, and the vineyard parcel benefits from the first rays of morning sun. The old vines are between 56 and more than 80 years old. The grapes are gently pressed, the juice is gently clarified, and then goes directly into wood. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation begin spontaneously in Stockinger barrels and foudres. The wines age on their lees for the first year without filtering or fining. Tirage takes place in July. There is no blending with other vintages or with other terroirs. The champagne matures in bottles for seven or eight years sur lattes. Each bottle is disgorged by hand six months before release. The dosage is 2 grams.
Colour
Golden yellow with very fine mousse.
Nose
The Vieille Vigne from Cramant is a wine with plenty of substance, always the ripest and most opulent in the portfolio, which is due to the terroir. The 2014 vintage seduces on the nose with notes of ripe, crumbly and crunchy stone fruit, fresh sourdough bread, buttered pastries, and sweet spices. There are also hints of honey, chamomile, hay flowers, and a touch of oak.
Palate
On the palate, the champagne is opulent and enveloping with plenty of ripe citrus and stone fruit. The Levant is creamy and has a good portion of tannin. Added to this is an acid structure that provides considerable punch on the palate, accompanied by a vibrant minerality in the finish.
