Product description for HM Lang Riesling RSS “This is not a love song” Steingutamphore 2018 (bio)
Information about the wine
This is a Riesling from 80-year-old vines from Steiner Schreck plots, which are cultivated according to Demeter standards. The Steiner Schreck lies around 320 meters above sea level and is one of the steepest sites in the Krems Valley. It is characterized by Gföller gneiss and granite. The Riesling was harvested on August 26th at an equivalent of 11% ABV and a pH of 2.8, the earliest ever before. It was pressed extremely slowly over two days on a self-designed 100-ton wooden press. The pressing process itself is completely reductive, but afterward the juice is given time to brown, meaning it is deliberately exposed to oxidation. The juice is fermented spontaneously and aged for more than two years on the full lees in a 550-liter Bordeaux earthenware amphora, which allows for micro-oxygenation similar to that of a large wooden barrel. During fermentation, Lang adds 3 to 5% destemmed grapes, which ferment intercellularly (as in carbonic maceration), thus continually restarting the fermentation process despite the constant 9°C in the cellar. Later, the wine is minimally sulfured. It was bottled unfiltered and lightly sulfured in February 2021 at a pH of approximately 3.2.

: Light straw yellow
Nose
A very fine, bright, crystal-clear nose, floral and citrusy in the early stages, but becoming increasingly spicy with air. In addition to lemons and grapefruit, there are hints of crisp peach and pear, along with a touch of verbena and anise, as well as some yeast. All of this appears very clear, harmonious, and authentic, airy and floating despite the substance. The difference to the same wine from wooden barrels is clearly evident, which appears somewhat more settled, somewhat darker, and also creamier.
Palate
The Riesling from Steiner Schreck is unique. On the one hand, the wine is floating and ethereal, and with its 11% ABV, quite lean and slender; on the other hand, the old vines lend it an additional dimension of depth and minerality. The long lees aging brings salt and a silky texture to the wine. The Riesling appears light and bright, fresh and powerful, yet as laid-back as a seasoned jazz musician. “This is not a Love Song” is actually a song by the former English post-punk band Public Image Ltd., but this wine is more reminiscent of Nouvelle Vague’s interpretation of the same song. It has something French, playful, and of course also something Burgundy—especially in contrast to the often heavy wines that were produced, at least in the past, in the Krems Valley and especially in the neighboring Wachau. Nevertheless, this is a profoundly distinctive wine, one that embodies a palpable idea and has a clear signature. The Riesling remains cool and bright throughout, herbaceous, powerful, and very salty, vibrant, and full of energy.
